Times are challenging for news organisations, with false information thriving in the auspicious internet environment, writes Maria Teresa Ronderos, director of the Open Society Program on Independent Journalism. But the “fake news” scandal isn’t all bad, as it has made it evident that properly answering the public’s need to know what is really going on in their communities takes more than just disseminating journalism under a known brand.
